All fun and joy in the biggest snowfall in the last 50 years in Spain
Today it snowed.
A lot.
Father lifts his daughter so she can stomp on a 30cm tall snowball they both had made seconds earlier. All she wanted to do was stomp stomp stomp on snow on Friday Jan. 8th.
The strongest blizzard in a long time has hit Madrid strong. The Spanish capital hasn’t seen this amount of snow since 1963. Even though we’re stuck at home, have no garbage collection service and we’ve got a global pandemic on the loose, there was much happiness on the streets today.
I went for a quick stroll in downtown Madrid this morning and all I saw were people having fun.

At the Plaza Dos de Mayo, just a few minutes after the snow started sticking people where already building snowmen.
Corredera Alta de San Pablo was completely covered in snow.
The statues of Daoiz and Velarde, heroes of the Spanish independence from Napoleon’s France, start to get covered in snow. Yes, someone replaced his sword with a bottle.
Dogs absolutely love snow. I’d say most Spanish dogs have never even seen this much snow. This guy would eat snowballs thrown at him.
Children were having a ball.
On the morning of Jan. 9th 2021, the Plaza 2 de Mayo was completely covered in white. Daoiz and Velarde, the statues under the arch, where almost invisible.
I don’t think I’d ever seen so much snow on trees.
Calle San Bernardo has a decent slope, where kids went on their sleighs.
Monasterio de Monserrat
This mother would push her little boy down the slope and two seconds later he would pull the breaks.
The narrow streets of downtown Madrid will be one big slushy mess tomorrow.
Cleaners were having a hard time keeping the steps from the subway entrances unfrozen.
Trees everywhere broke with the weight of the snow.
Corredera Baja de San Pablo was completely obstructed.
The Iglesia de San Ildefonso is a spot that usually in the summer is full of tables and people having tinto de verano. Well, it seems that’s off the menu today.
